Our Story

During the Christmas season of the 2020 Coronavirus pandemic, a friend asked me to oversee the adoption of a family in need for the holiday. Without giving it a second thought, I agreed. It was not long before the adoption of one family turned into the adoption of five.

I coordinated donation pickups, gift wrapping and the final delivery of the gifts to families. Sidney and Tameka assisted by providing storage for the donations and gift-wrapping toys for the children. During this Christmas holiday, several friends and I were able to bless eleven children and five adults with clothing and toys.

Days later, Tameka, Sidney, and I discussed the need to help more often than just during the Christmas season. Tameka then informed us that many students in the school district where she worked were experiencing economic hardship and would benefit greatly from having essentials to help them to thrive in school!

And out of this ExCEL to Thrive was born!

Who We Are

Tameka Caldwell, President

I am a wife, mother, youth minister, and teacher. I hold a Bachelor of Arts with Pre-professional Writing Specialization from Southern Illinois University. I also hold a Master of Arts Degree in Education from Saint Xavier University with endorsements to teach middle school and English Language Learners and a Masters of Arts Degree in Educational Leadership with Principal’s Endorsement from Aurora University.

After college, I began my career in print advertisement sales for publications, locally and nationally; but it was not long before I realized my calling to teach. I transitioned from sales into education and worked in many roles in the field of education; and it feels as if I haven’t worked a day in my life since my transition.

My passion is teaching. I have spent most of my life working with diverse student populations, and I understand first-hand the challenges that many of them face. I want to positively impact as many young peoples’ lives as possible by helping them see their value and reach their full potential. My desire is to help young people acquire the tools necessary to excel, so that they may thrive in this world, despite adverse circumstances. In my current role as assistant principal, I am not only able to support students, but also teachers to achieve this goal.

Rochelle D. Coleman, Vice President

I am an entrepreneur with a heart for helping others, especially our youth...our future!

I hold a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from Eastern Illinois University. By the grace of God, I have operated a successful business since 2012. My business provides transportation for men, women, and children to and from their medical appointments. Without my business, most of these people would not have any means to get to and from their life-sustaining appointments.

Although I have no children of my own, I am the proud surrogate to hundreds of my family and friends’ children, and I love them all!!

I think it is my life’s mission to help others. That’s just what I do! I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth and struggled with brokenness and poverty, but I didn’t let that stop me from achieving my goals and making a better life for myself!

I had an amazing village that loved, supported, and encouraged me to be great! So, it is only fitting that I help our youth achieve their greatness!

Sidney D. Caldwell, Treasurer

I am the father of two beautiful children and married to a wonderful woman who shares the same beliefs and values as me.

I worked in various industries over the last 30 years and have acquired strong leadership and the ability to work well with others through my varied experience.

For the last 25 years, I have worked with youth. I am a youth minister at my church. I also worked as an assistant director of a daycare for children, ages 6 weeks – 14 years old. One of my primary responsibilities in this role was to run the after-school program for students ages, 6 – 14.

I am dedicated to helping our youth be the best version of themselves. I want them to see their worth and reach their destinies. I firmly believe that if you see someone in need and you can help, then help! We never know when we may be in a situation where we need help.
